Our First Bootcamp Was a HIT!
We’re so happy to announce that March Madness Bootcamp was a success! We’re already done with the bootcamp and our participants did amazing!
First of all, deciding to start this first month long challenge happened very quickly. Community members were increasingly asking for an affordable local fitness solution and we wanted to gather participants together so they could encourage each other and connect.
We found a location, set up a schedule and got the word out! Within 2 weeks, we already had enough participants to start the bootcamp.
Our sessions always contained an element of cardiovascular and resistance training, with an emphasis on bodyweight exercises. Mindfulness moments and sessions were implemented in the sessions to help participants increase their body awareness and push through difficult rounds.
Slowly, but surely, the group grew closer. As workouts got harder, participants got more and more positive, encouraging each other, delivering high fives and supportive cheers. We didn’t realize it immediately, but we had provided the perfect environment and framework for this awesome “fit tribe” to emerge and thrive.
Halfway through the bootcamp, one of our participants and Local Administrative Support Coordinator at CSUMB, Haven Brearton, shared her experience with us:
I have to say I’m loving bootcamp so far – already recruited several coworkers for next month! Feels so good to finally be moving again during the week. I suppose I shouldn’t tell about how badly my shoulders hurt the day and night after those pike pushups! But I like pushing myself!
With several community members who successfully completed March Madness Bootcamp, our bootcamp will be added to our regular schedule with a 10-week semester.
Owner and head trainer Elizabeth Plante explains her choice:
Our very first bootcamp was meant to be a test to see if there was enough of a demand in the Marina community for the group trainings I have been dreaming of leading. This first cohort was diverse in age and fitness levels and that’s what made it extra fun and challenging for me as a trainer! They were so inspiring ! They all supported each other when the training got tough and later laughed and chatted at the end of each round…. This is promising. I feel like living a healthy lifestyle is something that can rally the Marina community and participate into making our beach town even more prosperous and awesome!

Mind and Body Balanced
Health and fitness is about so much more than doing push ups, running sprints and dieting. For that reason, our bootcamps feature mindfulness coaching sessions that help participants make changes in their lifestyle.
Among other things, mindfulness coach Oscar Flores teaches how to not rely solely on external factors for shifts in eating and fitness habits, but on internal indicators, such as being aware of negative and unhelpful thoughts around and during the times that people exercise and eat.
The benefits of our bootcamp go far beyond the physical conditioning. CSUMB Admin at the Department of Social Work, Vanessa Gonzales, started noticing the changes in her mind and body early on:
My body is becoming conditioned! Most importantly my spirits are lifted & stress levels have been reduced. All thanks to this bootcamp and our coaches!
Dedicated mindfulness session are planned throughout this Spring Semester’s bootcamp. Oscar will also be coaching mindfulness moments before and after several workouts.
