Let’s have some fun and blast those abs by performing the Suitcase Carry💼 !

Thursday @ 5PM at the Century Theater Plaza in Marina. Please bring a yoga mat and water if you prefer.

How to do the exercise:

Choose a kettlebell that is heavy enough to offer resistance but not too heavy that it compromises your upright posture.

Hold the kettlebell at your side just like a suitcase with your legs shoulder width apart and arms at the sides.

Engage the core and keep your posture upright.

Walk a certain number of steps or a set distance

The suitcase carry exercise is a great functional exercise because it mimics movement that we commonly do, such as carrying groceries.

It helps strengthen the muscles on our non-dominant side including the upper body, lower body, and core. It also helps with balance and grip strength.

Environment Design is a helpful tool to prompt you to change your behaviors in the right direction. It is an invisible force that nudges you constantly, making it hard to ignore the cues that lead you to behave in a way that advances your goals. Once you’ve set out your goals and vision, work on implementation:

Changing a habit isn’t easy. It requires practicing the same action over and over until it becomes almost second nature.

But how do you do that when you’ve tried so many times and failed? Try environment design;

- Set your workout clothes in your work bag or on a chair you can see first thing in the morning.
- Make nourishing AND delicious foods obvious 👉🏼 take them out and put them in a lunch container to take with you on the go, make those foods easy to grab in the fridge, leave fruits and nuts on your counter when you’ll remember to eat them
- Have a set of weights next to an appliance in the house that usually requires you to wait like a coffee machine. Once you’ve set it, grab your weights and do a few squats!
- Mind your tribe: the people who surround you are direct predictors of your behaviors. If your environment at work or at home is filled with people who value nature and enjoying the outdoors, you are likely to partake in regular walks and hikes. You don’t need to change friends and family, but make an effort to create relationships with people whose habits and passions align with your desired vision!

Some people really dread the thought of doing cardio exercises. Maybe they think they need to run, cycle, or swim.

But there are a lot more options out there! You can:

Dance
Join a group sport like soccer or basketball
Power walk
Box
Hike
Row
Jump Rope
Skate

Let’s look at why you should do cardio.

Cardio Exercises:

1. Increases your heart rate, which strengthens your heart and improves its efficiency.

2. Releases endorphins that help ease depression and anxiety and helps relieve stress.

3. Improves your endurance, allowing you to perform physical activities for longer periods without getting tired.

4. Burns calories and helps you lose weight, especially when combined with a healthy diet.

5. Helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer.

Get started improving the health of your heart. Complete a HIIT cardio circuit to get your heart rate up on Mondays at 5pm located at the Century Theater Plaza in Marina.

Start and end your week taking a brisk walk/jog/run to the beach and completing a workout incorporating medicine balls, dumbbells, kettlebells, resistance bands, and body weight exercises.

No equipment needed to bring. Just bring some water.

Circuit Training class is held Monday’s and Friday’s at 8am at the Sanctuary Beach Resort 🙂

There are many exercises that can be performed using dumbbells, but some of the most common ones include:

1. Bicep curls: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell in each hand with your palms facing up. Keeping your elbows close to your sides, curl up towards your shoulders, then lower back down to the starting position.

2. Shoulder press: Sit or stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder level with your palms facing forward. Push dumbbells up overhead until your arms are fully extended, then lower them back down to the starting position.

3. Chest press: Lie on a bench or stability ball with a dumbbell in each hand at chest level. Push them up towards the ceiling until your arms are fully extended, then lower them back down to the starting position.

4. Lunges: Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides and step forward
with one foot, bending both knees to lower your body down into a lunge. Push
back up to the starting position and repeat on the other side.

5. Deadlifts: Stand with your feet hip-width apart and hold a dumbbell in
each hand at your sides. Hinge forward at the hips, keeping your back straight
and the dumbbells close to your legs, then push back up to the starting position.

And there you go; five great exercises you can do with dumbbells, working the upper body and lower body!

Why exercise outdoors?

You could go to the gym and lift weights, do cardio, or take a fitness class. OR you could take your fitness outdoors!

There are many benefits to exercising outdoors:

1. Fresh air! If you have allergies, this can make it a bit more difficult.

2. Boosts feelings of well-being; the action of getting yourself outside for the goal of improving physical functioning improves well-being. Bring a friend and now you are building meaningful relationships which will further increase your well-being.

3. Sunlight which boosts production of Vitamin D. This vitamin is important for bone health, mood, regulating immune function and decreasing inflammation.

4. Research shows exercising outdoors reduces depression and anxiety.

5. Burn more calories with the changing environment and terrain. Think of the extra work it takes to bike when the wind is blowing against you.

6. There’s plenty to see and hear. See the squirrels, birds, trees, beach and hear the sound of the ocean, birds chirping, and wind blowing.
